I was alarmed this past week at how many requests I got to connect on Social Media that all gave me clear reasons to “just say no.” If you’re trying to build your business network through a social media community, please make sure you’re not sending requests with any of these faux pas.
Egg On Your Face: If your twitter avatar is still the default “egg” icon, I won’t be following you. No matter how bad of a picture you take, it’s still better than having this. Use it.
Silhouetted Head: If your Facebook or LinkedIn profile pics are still the default silhouetted head, I won’t be following you. And yes, I realize that this one’s a little redundant…that’s why I only gave it a half-point. I’d just rather drive the point home than skim over it. Again, any picture of you would be better than this.
On Lockdown: If I need you to approve my access to your Twitter and Instagram accounts, I won’t be following you. Maybe I’m too lazy on this one, but I just don’t want to send my request and then wait for a response. It’s not worth it to me, and it may not be worth it to those you really want to follow you.
Questionable Math: If you have more than 30,000 followers and only 100 tweets, I’m not following you. I’m not sure how you got your followers, and I don’t want to know. I just won’t be your next one.
Robotweets: If, after following your twitter handle, I get a Direct Message 2.3 seconds later that asks me to check out your website for more info, I’m not following you (any longer). Wine and dine me first.
What do you think about this? Do you have your own pet peeves in social media?
